Troops rescue wife, children and relatives as terrorists escape with Zamfara LG chairman
The Executive Chairman of Bungudu Local Government Area of Zamfara State, Hon. Nura Umar Abdullahi, has been abducted by armed terrorists after they attacked his residence in the early hours of Saturday, 25 July 2026.
According to the military, the attackers overpowered the Chairman's police and vigilante security detail before abducting him alongside members of his family.
Troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA responded immediately after hearing gunshots and engaged the fleeing terrorists in a fierce gun battle. The swift intervention forced the assailants to abandon five family members of the Chairman, including his two children, wife, mother and another relative, all of whom were successfully rescued.
However, the terrorists escaped into the surrounding bushes with the Chairman.
The attack also claimed the lives of three members of the Chairman's security detail, comprising two police officers and one local vigilante who resisted the attackers. A civilian was also killed, while the Chairman's elder brother, Alhaji Bello Umar, sustained injuries during the attack.
Following the incident, the Theatre Command launched a coordinated search-and-rescue operation involving troops of Operation FANSAN YAMMA, the Nigeria Police Force, the Department of State Services (DSS) and local vigilantes to secure the Chairman's release.
The military said security forces are carrying out deliberate operations at suspected terrorist hideouts and have deployed all available resources to ensure the safe rescue of the abducted Chairman.
The Theatre Command assured the Zamfara State Government and residents that every lawful operational measure is being taken to secure his release and bring those responsible to justice.
Residents were urged to remain calm, go about their lawful activities and provide credible information that could support the ongoing rescue operation
