DSS Warns of Alleged Plot to Abduct Schoolchildren in Edo, Suspect Arrested During Surveillance Operation

The Department of State Services (DSS) has reportedly uncovered an alleged plan by armed criminal elements to target schools in Edo State for mass abductions, prompting heightened security concerns across the state.

According to an intelligence report dated June 5, 2026, security agencies were alerted to a potential threat against educational institutions, particularly within the Edo North Senatorial District, following information obtained through intelligence monitoring.

The report indicated that discussions between two suspected bandits, identified as Bawa and Nuhu, revealed plans to shift focus to schoolchildren after previous efforts to kidnap high-profile individuals allegedly failed to yield results.

Intelligence sources disclosed that the suspects reportedly believed that attacks on schools could attract wider public attention and increase the likelihood of obtaining substantial ransom payments.

As part of preventive measures, operatives arrested a 25-year-old suspect, Emmanuel Momidu, who was allegedly found conducting reconnaissance activities around Makeke Secondary School in Makeke Community, Akoko-Edo Local Government Area.

Following the discovery, the DSS advised relevant authorities to strengthen security around schools and other vulnerable locations across the state, particularly in communities considered at higher risk.

The agency also recommended increased deployment of security personnel in collaboration with the Edo State Security Corps, local vigilante groups, hunters, and other community-based security outfits.

Additionally, security agencies were urged to intensify surveillance operations, intelligence gathering, and routine patrols in areas identified as potential targets.

The alert has renewed concerns about the safety of students and educational facilities amid persistent threats of kidnapping in parts of the country.

Security experts have continued to advocate stronger protective measures for schools, especially in rural communities, where educational institutions are often more vulnerable to attacks by criminal groups seeking ransom payments.
