Suspected Bandits Bomb Bridge in Niger, Kill Eight in Early Morning Explosion
At least eight people have been reportedly killed following an explosion on a major bridge linking Wawa and Luma communities in Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.
The incident occurred in the early hours of Monday when suspected bandits detonated an improvised explosive device (IED) on the bridge, a critical route connecting Luma, Babana, and Agwara communities. The road serves as a vital link for residents and traders, particularly those heading to the Babana border market.
Sources said the victims were travelling in a vehicle from Nuku to Woro when it ran over the explosive, triggering a blast that killed all occupants, including the driver.
The Niger State Police Command confirmed the incident, stating that the attackers are believed to have operated from the Kainji National Park area. Police spokesperson, SP Wasiu Abiodun, disclosed that the bridge was targeted in what appears to be an attempt to disrupt movement and security operations within the region.
He added that security agencies have intensified monitoring and clearance operations in the area, while efforts are ongoing to prevent further attacks.
