BOKO HARAM FINANCIERS BAG 20 YEARS IMPRISONMENT

The Federal High Court sitting in Abuja successfully prosecuted and secured the conviction of three Boko Haram financiers – Modu Aisami, Zana Zarama, and Umar Kame.

The justice was pronounced in Dawaki, Abuja on 4th November 2023 which subsequently sentenced the convicts to prison.

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, SAN, led the prosecution, while the defence counsel was headed by F.A. Bakre, the Director of the Criminal Justice Department at the Legal Aid Council, LAC.

The defendants sought leniency after the charges were individually presented before Justice Binta Nyako and Justice Emeka Nwite.

As outlined in the charge filed by the Director of Public Prosecutions of the Federation, Mr. M. Abubakar, Aisami, one of the defendants, supplied funds to the terrorist group by purchasing food products from them. The prosecution argued that he reasonably knew the proceeds would be used for terrorist activities, thus violating Section 13(1)(a)(ii) of the Terrorism Provision Amendment Act, 2013.

Following the defendant's admission of guilt, Justice Nyako convicted him on counts 2 and 3 of the charge.

Thereafter, Justice Nyako found him guilty and charged the convict with a sentence of 20 years imprisonment for each offence, with the terms to run concurrently.

Similarly, the second defendant, Zarama, was convicted by the trial judge and received a 10-year imprisonment sentence for concealing the identity of a Boko Haram member, Modu Sulum. Justice Nwite, in his judgment, also sentenced Mohammed and Kame to 10 years imprisonment.
