six suspected armed group members killed as security forces raid camp in Anambra
The Anambra State Police Command says six suspected members of an armed group were killed during a joint security operation in Amiyi, Ogbaru Local Government Area, on Saturday, August 22, 2026.
The operation involved personnel of the Rapid Response Squad, Awkuzu; Department of State Services (DSS); 302 Artillery Regiment, Onitsha; Nigerian Navy personnel from Ogbaru and Agunachamba operatives.
Acting on intelligence, the team trekked for about four hours through difficult terrain and dense palm forest before reaching a suspected criminal camp.
The suspects reportedly opened fire after sighting the security personnel, resulting in a prolonged gun battle. Six members of the group were killed, while others fled, with some reportedly sustaining gunshot wounds.
Two pump-action guns and charms were recovered from the camp, which was subsequently dismantled.
However, the operation recorded a casualty after an explosive device allegedly planted in the area detonated, killing one security operative and injuring another. The injured operative is receiving treatment in a hospital.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the participating security personnel and community operatives, while expressing condolences to the family of the fallen operative.
He reaffirmed the Command’s commitment to intelligence-led operations and inter-agency cooperation to dismantle criminal camps and recover illegal weapons across the state.
