Middle East Tensions Push African Nations Toward Dangote Refinery for Fuel Supplies

Rising geopolitical tensions in the Middle East, particularly involving Israel, the United States, and Iran, have forced several African countries to seek alternative sources of refined petroleum products, with Nigeria’s Dangote Petroleum Refinery emerging as a key option.

The disruption stems from the blockage and instability around the Strait of Hormuz, a critical global oil transit route responsible for about 20 percent of the world’s oil supply. The situation has significantly affected exports from Persian Gulf refineries, which many African countries depend on, triggering urgent efforts to secure alternative fuel supplies.

In response, countries such as South Africa, Ghana, and Kenya have reportedly opened discussions with the Dangote Refinery in Lagos for supply arrangements. South Africa is said to be negotiating a one-year contract, while other nations are exploring similar agreements to cushion the impact of reduced Middle Eastern supplies.

The refinery, valued at $20 billion with a capacity of 650,000 barrels per day, began full operations in 2024 and is increasingly seen as a major supplier within the continent. However, about 75 percent of its output is currently allocated to Nigeria’s domestic consumption, leaving limited volumes available for export despite growing demand.

Industry analysts note that while the refinery offers a vital regional solution and reduces Africa’s dependence on imported refined products, it may not fully meet the continent’s fuel needs, especially given the lack of sufficient strategic fuel reserves across African nations.

The ongoing crisis has intensified competition for available fuel supplies and highlighted Africa’s exposure to global energy disruptions. Some countries, including Ethiopia, have already introduced fuel conservation measures, while others are taking steps to secure supplies for critical sectors.

Observers say the situation reflects a growing shift toward intra-African energy solutions, with Nigeria’s Dangote Refinery playing an increasingly strategic role as global uncertainties continue to impact oil markets.
