MALI: ECOWAS MULLS REMOVAL OF SANCTIONS AS CNSP JUNTA SWEARS-IN TRANSITIONAL PRESIDENT

There are indications that the Heads of States of the Economic Community of West African States are considering lifting sanctions placed on Mali following a coup that led to the removal of President Boubacar Keita on August 18.

A mediation team led by Nigeria's former President Goodluck Jonathan arrived Bamako, Mali's capital on Wednesday, September 23 to continue consultations as the military begin their plans to return power to a civilian government.

Following pressure from ECOWAS, the National Committee for the Salvation of the People CNSP, on Monday, September 21 appointed former minister of defence Col. Maj. Bah Ndaw (retd) as its transitional President.

One of the key leaders of the August 18 military Putsch, Colonel Assimi Goïta, announced that he would be serving as Ndaw's Vice President.

The transitional government would be sworn-in on Friday, September 25. They are expected to rule for some months then organise an election and handover to the elected civilian President.

Recall that ECOWAS insisted that it would not remove sanctions placed on Mali if the military does not return power to a civilian and return to the barracks.
