El-Rufai Arraigned Over Alleged Phone Interception of National Security Adviser

Former Kaduna State Governor, Mallam Nasir El-Rufai, has been arraigned by the Federal Government in connection with the unlawful interception of phone communications belonging to National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.

El-Rufai, 65, appeared before the Federal High Court in Abuja, facing charges stemming from a Feb. 13, 2026, interview on Arise TV’s Prime Time Programme, where he allegedly admitted to being involved in the interception. He also reportedly acknowledged knowing the individuals responsible for the act, without reporting them to security agencies.

The charges, filed under case number TABU DET CR/99/2026, include:

Count One: Unlawfully intercepting phone communications, contrary to Section 12 (1) of the Cybercrimes (Prohibition, Prevention, etc.) Amendment Act, 2024.

Count Two: Failing to report the individuals involved in the interception, in violation of Section 27(b) of the same Act.

Count Three: Using technical systems to compromise national security and cause public alarm, in breach of the Nigerian Communications Act, 2003.

The case is being led by a team of Federal Government lawyers, and proceedings are expected to move forward as El-Rufai faces trial in the Abuja Judicial Division of the Federal High Court.
