CORONAVIRUS: TRUMP THREATENS TO STOP FUNDING WHO IN 30 DAYS

The US President Donald Trump has threatened to permanently stop funding the World Health Organisation in 30 days over its handling of COVID-19.

Donald Trump on Monday posted on Twitter, a letter he sent to the head of the World Health Organisation WHO threatening to stop funding the world health agency if it did not commit to "major substantive improvements" of its handling of COVID-19 within 30 days.

In the letter, Trump alleged that WHO “consistently ignored credible reports of the virus spreading in Wuhan in early December 2019” complained about the organisation’s alleged "alarming lack of independence" from China.

According to Trump, Tedros Adhanom, the Director-General of WHO could have saved "many lives" if he had acted more like Dr Harlem Brundtland, the WHO chief during the Sars outbreak of 2003.

Earlier on Monday, Dr Tedros Adhanom had pledged to initiate an independent probe to review the Coronavirus response as soon as possible.

The DG made the promise during his opening remarks at the 73rd World Health Assembly held virtually on May 18.
