Anglogold Ashanti, the world’s third-largest gold mining company in the world, has suspended operations at its Mponeng mine located in South Africa, after at least 164 employees at the site tested positive for Coronavirus.

According to AFP, AngloGold Ashanti conducted 650 tests since last Thursday, and 164 tests have so far returned positive.

A spokesman for the company, Chris Nthite said as a precautionary step, operations at the Mponeng Mine which initially was running at 50% capacity have been temporarily stopped to sanitize the workplace and complete contact tracing, Bloomberg reports.

Since the beginning of the Coronavirus pandemic, there have been reports of a cluster of infections in the workplace.

Earlier this month, Eons Intelligence reported that a person infected 533 workers with COVID-19 at a fish processing plant in Ghana.

Also, just last week, the Governor of Oyo state confirmed that over 60 workers in a communications company in Ibadan, Nigeria tested positive for Coronavirus.
