Borno State Governor Babagana Umara Zulum has expressed joy over the arrest of suspected Boko Haram financiers in the United Arab Emirates.

Governor Zulum noted that the arrest of 6 Nigerians in relations to funding Boko Haram is the first time in 11 years there appear to be a headway in tracking the sponsors of Boko Haram whose nefarious activities have left thousands of citizens killed, millions displaced, and properties worth billions of dollars destroyed in the northeastern part of Nigeria, particularly Borno.

Recall that Eons Intelligence reported that an appeal court convicted 6 Nigerians for funding Boko Haram activities.

The convicts, according to the court, used bureau de change operations to send $782,000 to Boko Haram in 17 separate transfers from Dubai to Nigeria between 2015 and 2016.

Governor Zulum also urged the Federal Government to set up a multi-stakeholder team with trusted representatives preferably from the “Federal Ministries of Justice, Foreign Affairs, the Nigerian Intelligence Agency, NIA, the Defence Intelligence Agency, DIA, the Multinational Joint Task Force in the Lake Chad, and the ECOWAS Intergovernmental Action Group on Terrorism Financing in West Africa, GIABA”, who can work with the UAE government to follow-up on the findings of the UAE and hopefully use the intelligence “to expand search on other Boko Haram sponsors that may be helping in similar ways”.
