Military disrupts alleged cattle theft attempt in Plateau, hunts fleeing suspects
Troops of the Joint Task Force, Operation ENDURING PEACE (OPEP), have disrupted an alleged attempt by suspected Berom militia members to rustle five cattle along the Jong-Nyerwei Road in Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.
The incident occurred at about 3:23 p.m. on September 1, 2026, when troops of Sector 4, OPEP, responded to reports of sporadic gunshots reportedly linked to suspected cattle rustlers operating along the route.
The troops’ prompt intervention forced the suspected criminals to abandon the operation and flee into the surrounding area. Subsequent findings by the troops revealed that the suspects had attempted to take away five cattle belonging to Mr Yakubu Umar.
Following the incident, troops launched an offensive operation across the surrounding hills in an effort to locate and apprehend the fleeing suspects.
The operation forms part of the ongoing efforts by Operation ENDURING PEACE to tackle cattle rustling, protect livestock owners and their communities, and sustain peace across Plateau State.
The military has also continued to intensify patrols and targeted operations in vulnerable areas to prevent criminal elements from operating freely and stop such incidents from developing into wider security challenges.
