Former London Imam Jailed for Life Over Serial Abuse of Women, Children
A former imam in London has been sentenced to life imprisonment after being convicted of multiple sexual offences involving women and underage girls over a period spanning more than a decade.
The convict, Abdul Halim Khan, 54, was sentenced at Snaresbrook Crown Court in the United Kingdom after being found guilty of 21 offences, including rape, sexual assault, child sexual abuse, and assault by penetration.
According to court proceedings, Khan used his position as a religious leader at a mosque in East London to gain the trust of victims before subjecting them to repeated abuse. Prosecutors said he manipulated victims through fear, intimidation, and claims linked to supernatural beliefs.
Investigators revealed that the former imam targeted seven victims, arranging private meetings where the assaults reportedly took place. Authorities also stated that he threatened some of the victims with spiritual consequences and harm to their families to prevent them from speaking out.
The case first came to light in 2018 after one of the victims disclosed the abuse to a teacher, prompting a large-scale police investigation. Detectives reportedly interviewed dozens of witnesses and examined multiple electronic devices during the probe.
Following the judgment, one of the survivors described the legal process as emotionally difficult but expressed relief that justice had finally been served after several years.
Lead investigator, Detective Chief Inspector Jennie Ronan, said Khan abused the trust placed in him as a religious figure and exploited vulnerable individuals for personal gratification.
Prosecutors also noted that cultural and religious experts were involved during the trial to help explain how religious teachings were manipulated to control and silence victims.
Authorities in the UK said the conviction reflects ongoing efforts to combat violence against women and children and hold offenders accountable regardless of their social or religious status.
