Army GOC Escapes Deadly Lakurawa Ambush in Kebbi, Five Terrorists Neutralised
The Nigerian Army has confirmed that the General Officer Commanding (GOC) 8 Division and Commander, Sector 2, Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, Major General Bemgha Koughna, survived an ambush by suspected Lakurawa terrorists near Mayama Hill in Kebbi State.
According to a statement issued by the Army on Monday and signed by Lieutenant Colonel Olaniyi Osoba, Acting Deputy Director, Army Public Relations, 8 Division, the incident occurred while the GOC was on his way to visit frontline troops deployed in the state.
The convoy reportedly came under heavy gunfire from armed insurgents who had laid in wait within the forested terrain around Mayama Hill. The attackers targeted the convoy in what the Army described as a coordinated ambush.
Troops accompanying the GOC responded with what was described as decisive and overwhelming firepower, repelling the assault and neutralising five of the attackers. The Army said the swift counteraction ensured the safety of the convoy and disrupted the terrorists’ plans.
Following the encounter, soldiers conducted a sweep of the surrounding area to prevent further threats and gather intelligence. During the operation, troops recovered several weapons and other items believed to belong to the fleeing insurgents.
Items recovered included one OJC gun, one PKT gun, two AK-47 rifles, four AK-47 magazines, one bandolier of PKT ammunition, several rounds of 12.7mm ammunition, a camel bag containing N840,000, two mobile phones and five motorcycles.
Military authorities stated that the seizure of the arms and materials would further weaken the operational capacity of the suspected Lakurawa group in Kebbi State and surrounding areas.
The Army added that troops remain deployed and on high alert in the area to prevent possible regrouping or reprisal attacks, reiterating its commitment to ongoing operations aimed at curbing insecurity across the North-West region.
