TWO DAY OLD BABY DIES OF CORONAVIRUS

A two-day-old baby has died of Coronavirus in South Africa, the country’s ministry of health announced. 


The baby is among 27 Coronavirus deaths recorded on Wednesday, May 20.


“Sadly, we have recorded the first neonatal mortality related to COVID-19 - this was a 2 day old baby that was born prematurely and therefore had lung difficulties,” Zweli Mkhize, South Africa’s health minister said in a statement. 


The mother had tested positive, and the disease was passed to the baby as well. 


The minister also announced that a health worker in the Western Cape also lost his life to Coronavirus. 


Mhize extended his condolences to the bereaved mother and all those who have lost dear ones to the global pandemic. 


With over 18,000 confirmed Coronavirus cases, South Africa presently has the highest number of COVID-19 cases on the continent.
