Terror in Borgu: Bandits Kill 26, Burn Police Station in Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso

At least 26 people have been killed and a police station destroyed following violent raids by armed bandits in Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso communities in the Borgu Local Government Area of Niger State.

The attack in Tungan-Makeri began around 8:00 p.m. on Friday when over 200 armed men stormed the village. Eyewitnesses reported that the assailants fired gunshots indiscriminately and set several homes on fire, operating for hours before withdrawing. Many residents fled their homes, leaving behind scenes of destruction.

A resident from the neighboring Zagatina village said he saw dozens of motorcycles carrying the attackers along their route.

After the assault on Tungan-Makeri, the gunmen moved to nearby Konkoso on Wednesday morning, where they reportedly encountered no security presence. In that community, the bandits set a police station on fire, exacerbating fears of further attacks.

Tungan-Makeri and Konkoso are major towns in Borgu LGA, and their targeting has raised alarm about the increasing boldness of criminal gangs in the region.

Some residents also reported seeing an Air Force aircraft in the vicinity of Tungan-Makeri following the initial attack, which they believe may have prompted the bandits to retreat.

The death toll from the attacks has now risen to 26. Attempts to get an official response from the Niger State Police Command were unsuccessful at the time of filing this report.
