Police Re-Arrest Escaped Kidnap Suspect in Oyo
The Oyo State Police Command has confirmed the successful re-arrest of a suspected kidnapper who had earlier escaped from police custody, an incident that sparked public concern and protests within the affected community.
According to a statement issued by the Command, the suspect, identified as Ayomide Kareem, 25, was apprehended on 17 March 2026 at about 11:30 p.m. by operatives attached to the Ojongbodu Area Command during a routine stop-and-search operation at Irepo Junction in the Ojongbodu area of Oyo.
Police said the suspect was intercepted while trekking within the vicinity and was subsequently questioned. Further interrogation and background checks confirmed that he was the same individual who had escaped from police custody at the Jobele Division on 10 March 2026 in connection with a suspected kidnapping case.
The Command disclosed that the suspect is currently in custody and assisting with ongoing investigations.
Following the earlier escape, which triggered protests within the community, the Commissioner of Police, Oyo State Command, CP Femi Haruna, ordered an intensive manhunt to ensure the suspect’s re-arrest. The Command also initiated disciplinary actions against officers involved in the incident over unprofessional conduct.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Jobele Division was redeployed, while other affected officers were detained and are currently undergoing orderly room trial as part of efforts to reinforce accountability and professionalism within the Force.
The Commissioner of Police expressed appreciation to the Inspector-General of Police for continued support in promoting discipline and operational effectiveness across commands nationwide.
The Oyo State Police Command reassured residents of its commitment to ensuring the safety and security of lives and property, urging members of the public to remain calm, law-abiding, and continue to provide credible information to security agencies.
