Police Kill Suspected Bandit, Recover AK-47 While Foiling Attack in Sokoto
The Sokoto State Police Command has repelled a bandit attack on Daraye Village in Wamakko Local Government Area, killing one suspected attacker and recovering an AK-47 rifle with live ammunition.
According to a statement issued by the command's spokesperson, DSP Ahmad Rufa'i, the operation was launched after police received intelligence that a large group of heavily armed bandits had invaded the community.
Operatives of the Anti-Kidnapping Unit, the Village Crime Reduction Unit (VCRU), and other tactical teams were immediately deployed to reinforce personnel at the Wamakko Divisional Police Headquarters before confronting the assailants in a fierce gun battle.
The police said the attackers were overwhelmed by superior firepower and fled into nearby forests with suspected gunshot wounds. A subsequent search of the area led to the recovery of one AK-47 rifle and a magazine containing 28 rounds of 7.62mm live ammunition, while one suspected bandit was confirmed dead.
The command added that confidence-building patrols have been intensified around the affected community, while neighbouring police divisions have been placed on alert to intercept fleeing suspects, particularly those seeking medical treatment for gunshot injuries.
The Commissioner of Police, Hayatu Hassan Shaffa, commended the officers involved for their bravery and professionalism, reaffirming the command's commitment to combating banditry and protecting lives and property across Sokoto State.
