'Police cannot attribute actions to spirituality, but in this case, spirituality appears to be the only explanation for what he did,’ says Delta Police PRO Bright Edafe, reacting to the extrajudicial killing of a suspect by a police officer.

The Delta State Police Command has confirmed that the officer responsible for shooting and killing a suspect in Effurun, an incident captured in a viral video, will face trial for murder.

Speaking during an interview on Channels Television’s The Morning Brief on Wednesday, Edafe disclosed that the officer, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, has been transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings.

He described the officer’s conduct as highly unprofessional, adding that the level of violence displayed was difficult to explain by conventional standards, likening it to something beyond normal reasoning.

Addressing concerns over why the officer’s face was covered in the official statement announcing his arrest, Edafe noted that it was done in line with professional standards.

The killing of 28-year-old Mene Ogidi has since triggered widespread outrage across social media platforms.

Police authorities stated that the incident occurred on April 26, 2026, when operatives attached to the Effurun Area Command acted on intelligence indicating that the deceased had been apprehended while allegedly attempting to waybill a parcel containing a Beretta pistol loaded with four rounds of ammunition.

According to the police, ASP Nuhu Usman, who led the operation, violated Force Order 237 and the Nigeria Police Force’s Standard Operating Procedures when he discharged his firearm, resulting in the suspect’s death.
