POLICE BRUTALITY: OFFICERS TO BE CHARGED FOR MURDER

Six police officers would be charged for murder and assault based on their alleged involvement in extrajudicial killings while enforcing the curfew put in place to curb the spread of the Coronavirus in Kenya, the Independent Police Oversight Authority (IPOA) says.

According to IPOA, Kenyan police have killed at least 15 persons while enforcing the COVID-19 induced curfew.

The UN human rights office report claims that about 182 Kenyan communities experienced various forms of police brutality, including sexual violence and the use of live ammunition.

In response, the police told the BBC that the IPOA report were complaints from members of the public, and each case would require investigations.

Police spokesperson Charles Owino, however, confirmed that a 13-year-old boy, Yassin, was accidentally shot in the stomach by police in Nairobi.

According to Owino, Yassin’s shooting was accidental as the police officer wanted to disperse the crowd by shooting into the air.

He added that it was unfair to brand the police as killers at a time when they are on the frontline risking their lives to prevent the spread of the virus.
