IS NIGERIA ON THE BRINK

In a wave of unprecedented and seemingly coordinated violent attacks borne out of suppressed hunger, hardship and unabated sufferings, the Nigerian masses on Wednesday, February 15, 2023, took to the streets to exhibit their pent-up anger through protests occurring simultaneously across several states of the Federation. From Benin to Oyo, Ondo, Ogun and Delta, citizens are expressing their discontent with the ongoing fuel crisis, scarcity of redesigned naira notes and daily lives lost to trailer accidents. In response to the hearing of a suit filed by Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara states against the federal government seeking to stop the full implementation of the naira redesign policy, the Supreme Court adjournment of the hearing until February 22, 2023, further escalated the already tense situation. Though it is too early to say if the nation is on the brink, the government must take immediate decisive actions to address these issues in rapid succession in order to stop further escalation of the crisis.

Some suggestions:

 1. Provide fuel and ensure adequate supply of the newly redesigned naira notes: The government could take steps to ensure adequate supply of fuel and the newly redesigned naira notes to ease the tension caused by the fuel and currency crisis.

2. Investigate trailer accidents and address road safety challenges: The government should investigate the cause of trailer accidents and take steps to address the challenges facing the road safety sector in the country.

3. Increase public awareness of the naira redesign policy: The government should increase public awareness of the naira redesign policy and its benefits to the Nigerian economy.

4. Address the grievances of States: The government should address the grievances of the states by engaging in dialogue with them to find an amicable solution to the dispute.

5. Provide incentives for businesses: The government could provide incentives for businesses that are affected by the fuel and currency crisis in order to help them stay afloat during the period.

6. Strengthen security: The government should strengthen security across all states adversely affected by the fuel and currency crisis to ensure the safety of citizens and prevent the escalation of violence.              In conclusion, the Nigerian masses have spoken loud and clear, and their pleas must be heard. The government needs to take action to address the grievances of the people and find a way to resolve the fuel crisis, scarcity of redesigned naira notes, and the numerous trailer accidents that have taken the lives of innocent people. The government also needs to provide an effective and long-term solution to the underlying issues that caused these protests in the first place.

Ultimately, it is important that the Nigerian government and all its stakeholders take the necessary steps to ensure that the nation is kept safe and secure and that the people's voices are heard and their grievances addressed. It is also essential that the government takes the time to examine the root causes of these protests and work to create a better future for the citizens of Nigeria.
