IJEBU IGBO COMMUNITY PROTEST INCESSANT KILLINGS BY DANGOTE TRUCK DRIVERS, DEMAND NEW MOU

Youths and community elders in Ijebu Igbo are leading a protest against Dangote truck drivers reckless driving which has led to incessant killings of members of the community.

The protestors are also demanding that Dangote Granite Mines Limited, a subsidiary of Dangote Group, enter into a five-year Memorandum of Understanding, MOU that would include developmental provisions for the maintenance of the roads the truck ply every day.

The youths who began protesting from January 4, told reporters that Dangote trailers frequently ply Alafia, Sopin-Osun Road in Ijebu North Local Government Area of Ogun State at an alarming rate but was not committed to developmental projects.

“For example, the road which was made during the time of late Chief Obafemi Awolowo as the Premier of Western Region that was still serving them before the coming of Dangote trucks has been destroyed by Dangote trucks.

“It was a major road to various farmlands of the people. Farming is the main occupation of the people. Many people have developed lung diseases as a result of the dust our people are daily consuming,” Adesanya Arowolo Sakirudeen. President-General of the Congress of Ijebu Igbo Youth told reporters during one of the earlier protests.

Eons Intelligence gathered that Dangote had initially signed a 5-year MOU with some elders in the community which would be due in May.

Speaking on why they are protesting now, the community members say they are crying before Dangote signs another MOU with elders who do not have the interest of the community at heart.

Eons Intelligence gathered that the Nigeria military arrived at the ongoing protest and appealed to the protestors to go home with a promise to mediate with Dangote Group.

It is important that the State Governor address the issues raised by the aggrieved members of Ijebu Igbo community to sustain a good communal relationship.
