FG declares May 1 public holiday to mark Workers’ Day
The Federal Government has announced Friday, May 1, 2026, as a public holiday in celebration of International Workers’ Day.
The declaration was made by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, in a statement issued on Thursday in Abuja.
In the statement, signed by the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Magdalene Ajani, the minister congratulated Nigerian workers for their continued contributions to national development.
He praised the dedication and resilience of the workforce, describing them as a driving force behind the country’s economic growth and progress.
Tunji-Ojo urged workers across both public and private sectors to remain committed to their duties, while embracing patriotism and improved productivity as key pillars for national advancement.
He noted that sustained hard work and dedication are critical to achieving long-term economic stability and development, especially as the nation navigates current challenges.
The minister also reaffirmed the Federal Government’s commitment to protecting the welfare and security of workers, while promoting an enabling environment for business growth and economic expansion.
He encouraged Nigerians to observe the holiday peacefully and responsibly, adding that the occasion provides an opportunity to reflect on the importance of unity, diligence, and collective effort in nation-building.
