FATHER AND SON ARRESTED OVER THE MURDER OF A BLACKMAN

A man and his son have been arrested for the fatal shooting of a jogger named Ahmaud Arbery and will face murder charges and aggravated assault, the police say.

According to the police statement, on February 23, The Father, Gregory McMichael age 64, and his 34-year-old son, Travis McMichael confronted 25-year-old Arbery with two firearms. During the encounter, Travis McMichael shot and killed Arbery who was jogging in the neighbourhood.

Gregory McMichael told the police that the deceased looked like a person whom they suspected in a recent break in the area.

However, reports say there were no reports of break-ins in the area weeks prior to Arbery’s murder.

However, on Tuesday, May 5, a video surfaced showing how Arbery was killed. The 36-second video shows Arbery jogging down the middle of the street towards a pickup truck with Gregory at the back of the truck and his son standing at the side.

As Arbery approaches, he goes around the pickup on the right side, and just as he's passing the front of the vehicle, he makes a left and begins tussling with Travis McMichael.

A shot goes off, and the two disappear off the left side of the screen as Arbery appears to throw a punch. Gregory McMichael takes out a handgun but doesn't fire. A second shot is heard as the men who are fighting are off-screen. As the men come back into view, both are still grabbing the shotgun.

Arbery appears to throw a right-handed punch at Travis McMichael's head as a third gunshot is heard.

Travis McMichael walks away as his father runs toward them with his gun in his right hand.

After they chased down Arbery.

The viral video reignited concerns online about hate crimes against the black community. The McMichaels were eventually arrested yesterday, over 10 weeks after the crime was committed.

The Glynn County Sheriff E. Neal Jump expressed his displeasure over the late arrest of the culprits: "Am I upset that it has taken this long for the justice part to come? As the sheriff, I'm upset. It shouldn't have taken that long. If that was my son, I'd be upset," He said.
