Edo Police Intensify Rescue Operation After Deadly GUO Bus Attack on Ore–Benin Axis
Following earlier reports of a deadly attack on a commercial bus along the Ore–Benin corridor, the Edo State Police Command has launched an intensive search and rescue operation to secure the release of abducted passengers and track down those responsible.
The incident occurred on April 18, 2026, at about 1800hrs along the Lagos–Benin Expressway within the Iguobazuwa axis, where a GUO Transport bus with registration number FA 280 YJ, conveying five passengers, was ambushed by suspected kidnappers.
During the attack, the driver was shot and later confirmed dead. One female passenger who sustained gunshot injuries was rescued by responding officers and rushed to a hospital, where she is currently receiving treatment and responding positively.
Police confirmed that three other passengers were abducted and taken into nearby forested areas.
In response, the Commissioner of Police, Monday Agbonika, has ordered a coordinated rescue effort across the axis. Divisions along the Ore–Benin route and adjoining forests have been directed to commence intensive search operations under the supervision of their respective Area Commanders.
Operatives of the Command’s Anti-Kidnapping Unit have also been deployed to reinforce ongoing efforts, alongside tactical teams working in collaboration with local hunters and vigilantes to comb the forests.
The body of the deceased driver has been deposited at a hospital mortuary, while the attacked vehicle has been recovered.
The Command reassured the public of its commitment to securing the safe return of the abducted victims and bringing the perpetrators to justice, urging residents to remain calm and provide credible information to support ongoing operations.
