COVID-19: PERU OVERTAKES ITALY IN TOTAL NUMBER OF CASES

Peru is now the seventh most infected country in the world, and the second most infected country in the Latin Americas, as its Coronavirus infections surpass a total of 240,000 infections exceeding Italy, Government data showed.


The Peru authorities moved swiftly to lock down its citizens as the pandemic broke forth in early March. 


There was an exponential rise in cases in May, reaching a peak of more than 8,000 per day late in the month. 


More than 7,000 Peruvians have died from the disease, the Government reported.


According to the World Health Organisation (WHO), Peru has the second-highest number of confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Latin America, behind Brazil, and the seventh-highest globally.


The Americas have become the epicentre of the coronavirus outbreak, logging nearly 4 million infections and 204,000 deaths. 


Peru's Government has extended a national lockdown till Jun 30th, as infections continue to increase in some regions. 


The country reported 3,752 new infections on Wednesday.
