Army Offensive in Benue Yields Arrests, Arms Recovery, Foils Cattle Rustling Attempts

Troops of Operation WHIRL STROKE have intensified intelligence-led patrols across Benue State, recording significant gains against criminal elements ahead of the farming season.

The operations, aimed at securing agricultural communities, have targeted cattle rustlers and armed bandits, contributing to improved safety within affected areas.

On March 23, 2026, troops stationed at Ayilamo, acting on credible intelligence from residents of Anyiin, conducted a joint raid with the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Agro Rangers along the Anyiin–Ugba road. Four suspects were arrested with remains of butchered cattle and subsequently handed over to the Nigeria Police for further investigation. Troops also facilitated veterinary care for injured livestock.

In a separate operation, troops of the Forward Operating Base (FOB) Otukpo, supported by the Quick Response Group, raided a criminal hideout at Amla Icho. While some suspects fled, five were arrested. Recovered items included locally fabricated firearms, mobile phones, hard drugs, and spent cartridges.

Further clearance patrols in Mbapa and Mbabuande communities led to the arrest of four additional suspects. During one encounter, an armed suspect attempted to disarm a soldier but was neutralised, while others escaped.

Troops also rescued an injured herder, identified as Idris Abubakar, who was attacked while tending cattle. He was evacuated for medical treatment. In a related operation, three suspected cattle rustlers were apprehended at Zongo Akiki and handed over to the police.

On March 24, troops on night patrol in Uhembe village foiled another rustling attempt. The suspects fled, abandoning stolen cattle and a vehicle, both of which were recovered.

Military authorities attributed the successes to strong collaboration with local communities, whose intelligence has enhanced operational effectiveness.

The Force Commander, Major General Moses Gara, reaffirmed the commitment of Operation WHIRL STROKE to sustain proactive operations aimed at ensuring a secure environment for farming activities and long-term stability in the region.
