ZABARMARI MASSACRE: UN WITHDRAWS CLAIM 110 RICE FARMERS DIED IN BOKO HARAM ATTACK

The United Nations has withdrawn its claim that 110 rice farmers were killed by Boko Haram Insurgents in Zabarmari community, Borno State.

On Sunday, the Borno State Governor Professor Babagana Zulum had attended the painful burial of 43 rice farmers who were murdered by Boko Haram Insurgents on Saturday, November 28 while harvesting their crops.

Later on Sunday evening, the UN issued a statement quoting the head of the UN System in Nigeria, Edward Kallon, claiming that at least 110 farmers were killed in the attack.

The Nigeria Army, however, insisted that the bodies of the victims recovered from the farm as of Sunday were 43.

In a new release on Monday, November 30, the UN retracted its earlier claim of 110 deaths, describing it as inaccurate.

According to the UN’s head, public information the earlier numbers quoted by Mr Kallon were not correctly sourced.

The UN thereby issued a fresh statement, replacing the portion where it quoted “110 deaths” with “unspecified figure”.

“Please note the number of 110 civilians killed on Saturday’s attack is an unconfirmed number and the correct version of the statement by the Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator is the one published yesterday on Reliefweb and used on OCHA Nigeria’s Twitter account,” the UN said in a statement.
