troops intercept suspected gunrunners, rescue six victims in Zamfara
Troops of 1 Brigade, Nigerian Army, operating under Joint Task Force North West, Operation FANSAN YAMMA, have arrested three suspected gunrunners and rescued six victims during separate operations in Zamfara State.
At about 2:05 p.m. on August 23, troops conducting a stop-and-search operation along the Kauran Namoda–Shinkafi Road intercepted a Golf Wagon carrying three suspects.
The suspects were identified as 20-year-old Lukman Sulaiman, 18-year-old Nafiu Isa and 60-year-old Adamu Lawali, the driver of the vehicle.
A search of the vehicle led to the recovery of an AK-103-2 rifle, one magazine and 30 rounds of 7.62mm ammunition concealed inside a bag of millet. Preliminary investigation indicated that the weapon was allegedly being transported to Yar-Galadima in Maru LGA.
The suspects, weapon, ammunition and vehicle have been taken into custody as efforts continue to apprehend another individual identified as Tijjani Goguwa, who is allegedly linked to the firearm.
In a separate operation the same day, troops at Forward Operating Base Anka detected an attack on a vehicle by suspected terrorists at Gadan Manya along the Anka–Gummi route.
The troops swiftly moved to the scene and engaged the attackers as they attempted to force the occupants into the bush. The intervention compelled the terrorists to abandon all six victims and flee.
The rescued victims were evacuated to General Hospital Anka for treatment. Three sustained minor injuries and were reported to be in stable condition.
The Army said troops would sustain patrols and surveillance operations across the area to disrupt terrorist activities, protect civilians and secure major routes in Zamfara State.
