Police Recover Stolen Vehicles Trafficked to Ghana and Niger, Arrest Three Suspects

The Nigeria Police Force has recorded a major success in its fight against cross-border crimes with the recovery and repatriation of multiple stolen vehicles trafficked from Nigeria to neighbouring countries. The recoveries were facilitated through the INTERPOL National Central Bureau (NCB), Abuja.

In a coordinated effort between INTERPOL NCB Abuja and INTERPOL NCB Accra, operatives recovered a 2020 Toyota Prado belonging to a Federal Government agency. The vehicle had been stolen during a robbery incident in Abuja. Following investigations in Ghana, three suspects were arrested and subsequently arraigned in court in Accra. The vehicle has since been returned to Nigeria and officially handed over to the relevant agency.

In a separate operation, INTERPOL NCB Abuja also recovered a 2018 Toyota Hilux vehicle that was stolen from a staff member of another Federal Government agency on 18 October 2024 in the Utako District of Abuja. With the support of INTERPOL NCB Niamey, the vehicle was tracked to Agadez in Niger Republic and was handed over at the Nigeria–Niger border (Ilela/Konni) to an official representative of the affected agency.

Additionally, the Nigeria Police is in the final stages of recovering two more stolen vehicles—a Toyota Land Cruiser SUV and a Toyota Land Cruiser Prado SUV—both taken during separate incidents in Abuja in May 2025 and reportedly sold in Niamey, Niger Republic.

The Force has urged citizens to register their vehicles on the Police electronic platforms and adopt necessary security measures to improve recovery chances in the event of theft.

Inspector-General of Police, IGP Kayode Adeolu Egbetokun, Ph.D., NPM, praised the dedication and expertise of the operatives involved in the recoveries. He also expressed deep appreciation to INTERPOL NCB Accra, INTERPOL NCB Niamey, and the Nigerian High Commission in Accra for their invaluable support in these operations.

The IGP reaffirmed the Nigeria Police Force’s commitment to advancing global policing collaboration and strengthening efforts against transnational crimes.
