police-led team arrests nine, recovers three AK-47 rifles in Anambra
A police-led joint security team has arrested nine suspects and recovered three AK-47 rifles, a pump-action gun, charms and other items during a stop-and-search operation in Isuofia, Aguata Local Government Area of Anambra State.
The operation was carried out in the early hours of Friday, August 28, 2026, by the Joint Operation Base, Aguata, in collaboration with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Army, Department of State Services (DSS), Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Nigeria Immigration Service and Agunechemba Security Outfit.
The team intercepted a custom-coloured Sienna and an ash-coloured Toyota RAV4 at a checkpoint, leading to the arrest of seven men and two women.
A search of the vehicles uncovered three AK-47 rifles, one pump-action gun, charms and other items considered relevant to the investigation.
During preliminary questioning, the suspects reportedly claimed to be security operatives from a neighbouring state but could not satisfactorily explain their identities, affiliations, possession of the firearms or reasons for entering Anambra.
The suspects and recovered items have been taken into custody as investigations continue.
The Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Command, CP Nnanna Oji Ama, commended the security personnel for the operation and urged them to sustain vigilance and intelligence-led stop-and-search activities across the state.
