Easter Day Attack Leaves 17 Dead, Homes Destroyed in Benue Community
At least 17 people have been confirmed dead following a violent attack on Mbalom community in Gwer East Local Government Area of Benue State during Easter celebrations.
The incident occurred on Sunday when suspected armed attackers stormed the community, opened fire on residents, and set several houses ablaze.
Eyewitnesses said the sudden violence left many dead, several others missing, and numerous residents displaced. So far, 17 bodies have been recovered, while search operations continue in nearby bushes for those still unaccounted for.
The attack also destroyed homes and properties, forcing survivors to flee to safer areas. A resident, who spoke anonymously, described the situation as chaotic, noting that many people were caught off guard and several remain missing.
In response, Governor Hyacinth Alia condemned the attack, describing it as heinous and unacceptable. In a statement issued by his Chief Press Secretary, Tersoo Kula, the governor said the incident poses a serious threat to peace and security in the state.
He expressed sympathy to the affected families and assured them of government support, while also noting a pattern of targeted attacks in parts of the state. The governor pledged to strengthen security measures and urged security agencies to intensify efforts to apprehend those responsible.
Authorities confirmed that investigations into the incident are ongoing.
