NIGERIA AT 60: LAGOS POLICE BAN PROTESTS, WARN YOUTHS TO STAY HOME

As Nigeria celebrates its 60th Independence Anniversary, the Lagos Police Command has banned all illegal gatherings, rallies, or protests of any kind. 


The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State Command, CP Hakeem Odumosu made this known on Wednesday, September 30 during a security meeting with the Area Commanders, Divisional Police Officers, and Heads of Department at the State Headquarters, in Ikeja.


According to a press release signed by the State Command’s spokesperson, Olumuyiwa Adejobi, the police would not allow protests against the sovereignty of Nigeria in Lagos state.

Recall that EONS Intelligence reported that the Lagos State Government urged residents to celebrate Nigeria’s Independence Anniversary at home, adhering to COVID-19 guidelines. 

However, there have been calls to from different groups to stage protests on October 1. 

The Odua Republic Agitators say it would be leading a protest demanding that the Yoruba nation secedes from Nigeria while the Independent People of Biafra IPOB have said it would be holding a Sit-At-Home protest in solidarity with the Odua People. Omoyele Sowore, a former Presidential Candidate, has also called for a #RevolutionNow protest on October 1. 


CP Hakeem Odumosu has warned parents and guardians to ensure their children and wards to desist from participating in any of rallies, protests or be mobilized to wage war against the government of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

According to the statement released, the police will prosecute the parents or guardians of youths arrested for protesting against the sovereignty of Nigeria.
